Compact nursing licenses are based on the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), a reciprocal agreement allowing nurses to practice in all participating states without the need for additional licensure. Currently, 41 states accept compact licenses.
To be eligible for a compact nursing license, you must meet the requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program
- Passing the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN examination
- No disciplinary action against nursing license
Please note that compact nurses must always abide by the laws and regulations of the state where they practice. Any disciplinary action taken against a nurse's license in one compact state may affect their ability to practice in other compact states.
Gifted Healthcare makes it easy to obtain a license in a new state. Our seasoned credentialing team is here to help you through the entire process of getting a new license, renewing a license, or answering any other questions you might have throughout the process.
California is not a compact state. To become a licensed nurse in California, you must meet the educational and professional requirements established by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
Preliminary Education and Examination Requirements:
- Obtain an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program.
- Pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) or a State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE).
- Application/Endorsement
Once you have met the preliminary education and examination requirements, you may apply or request endorsement for a license through the California BRN.
