5 Reasons Why Nurses Work the Holidays

September 23, 2016

We’re thankful for you this upcoming holiday season. There are plenty of reasons why nurses choose to work the holiday season, and many nurses find that it can be truly rewarding to work throughout the holiday season.

Here are some of the reasons Gifted Healthcare nurses keep working the holidays year after year.

The Facility or Hospital Will Truly Appreciate You

Your willingness to work the holidays as a nurse will be appreciated by the facility or hospital. The facility generally provides a fantastic meal on holidays for patients, family members, and staff. Many nurses find that since they have to be away from their families, one of the best ways to avoid homesickness is to surround themselves with patients and family members of those less fortunate.

You’ll Have More Time to Spend with Patients

Since facilities and hospitals schedule less procedures around the holidays, nurses have the time to really get to know patients. Clinicians may find that they finally have that perfect patient ratio.

The Facility or Hospital May Be Less Chaotic

When you combine less scheduled procedures and surgeries with a better patient ratio, you may experience a less chaotic environment, which anyone can appreciate being a nurse that is working the holidays. Family members that visit patients during the holiday season tend to lighten the load on the nursing staff.

You Can Make Someone’s Holiday Brighter

Not everyone has supportive family willing to spend their holiday in the hospital with their healing family members. When patients may be feeling lonely or out of the loop, nurses have the opportunity to act like family for the holidays. You may just be the person to cheer up someone in pain, possibly impacting his or her life for years to come.

Just because you are working the Holiday, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate

Dress up, bring gifts, decorate, play music, bake something! Just because you can’t be present for dinner or the unwrapping of gifts doesn’t mean you can’t bring the holiday spirit to the hospital or facility.
