What Do School Social Workers Do?

School social workers have an essential role in the life of a student. The average classroom in America is filled with 20 students that face an assortment of challenges, all different from the student that sits next to them. The school social worker is the link between the home, school, and community, providing direct services to these students that will support their academic and social success.

This is no job for those without the passion and the drive to help every student. School social workers attend extra years of schooling to earn a Master’s degree in social work. The specialized education gives each social worker unique knowledge and skills they can bring to the school system and use to advance the student services team.

As a travel school social worker, there are many opportunities to help students across the country while on each assignment. Once placed in a school, a travel school social worker takes on the role of the usual school social worker to help the students that struggle with mental health issues, violent or stressful home environments or physical disabilities.

School Social Workers aid the mission of the school system. They provide a supportive and safe environment for students to learn and grow. There are a variety of ways that the social worker helps students from mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, to consultations with teachers, parents, and administrators. The social worker also often provides individual and group counseling/therapy for students.

The most impactful school social workers are approachable and empathetic which creates a safe space for students to share their struggles and ask for help. Depending on the students’ situation, the counselor might offer sessions that strive to help the student improve classroom concentration, anger management, and more. The counselor is also there for any student facing the process of grief or loss.

In times of crisis or stress, the school social worker becomes the backbone of much of the school community. In 2020, counselors faced challenges of performing their jobs. Thrown in the midst of a pandemic, no one could have prepared for this challenge. Schools across the nation were shut down and millions of students had to adjust to an entirely new learning environment. This altered the way school social workers met with students. However, it never altered the importance of the school social worker’s duty. Even more so today, as students return to the school halls, travel school social workers are focused on helping students. They are there to help navigate their transition back to the classroom.

In helping with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, school social workers are helping the system respond to the individual student needs and giving them the individual attention they need for their development.
