According to Eugene, Cascades & Coast, Springfield was first settled in 1848 due to its close proximity to natural spring water and its abundance of fertile pastures. Beginning in the 1890s, a number of working-class homes began to spring up, built by blue-collar residents employed within the city's booming lumber industry.

To preserve these homes, which were built between 1890 and 1940, the Washburne Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Many of the homes are named for their first owners, and visitors can take part in a guided walking tour that explores the history of Springfield.
