What Is an In-Home Clinical Trial Nurse?

January 21, 2021

Clinical trials are research studies with human volunteers, conducted to improve and expand knowledge in the medical community. Nurses (RNs) and travel nurses support clinical trials and research.

These RNs carry out the clinical trial with accuracy and integrity, in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations. RNs follow the standard policies and procedures of the clinical trial while caring for the patients who have volunteered to participate in the study.

Although many clinical trials are conducted in healthcare or research facilities, some take place inside the homes of volunteers. This creates a need for in-home Clinical Trial RNs.

Read on to learn more about the role and responsibilities of the in-home Clinical Trial Nurse.

In-Home Clinical Trial RN

An In-Home Clinical Trial RN provides care in the homes of volunteer patients. According to the Oregon Medical Research Center, highly skilled in-home nurses and clinical service providers can bring everything from simple questionnaires and vital sign assessments to complex biological sample collection, blood draws, and study drug administration to participants' homes based on protocol requirements.

Providing participants with in-home care during a clinical trial can significantly improve research outcomes and patient participation. By including home health visits in the clinical trial, volunteer patients are relieved of the burdens of travel and studies can reach larger sample groups.

Clinical Trials RN: Role & Responsibilities

The role of the in-home Clinical Trial RN is similar to clinicians working at one specific research location.

The nurse must first travel to the homes of volunteers. Once they have arrived, nurses are primarily responsible for the accurate completion of visit procedures and collection of information or samples from participants according to protocols. RNs are also responsible for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of research participants. In studies of limited scope, the Clinical Trial Nurse may also act as a coordinator, overseeing in-home staff and participants to ensure compliance with all research protocols.

This role gives you the opportunity to use your nursing experience while supporting important research. These opportunities also offer flexible scheduling on a per diem and shift-work basis.

In-home Clinical Trial Nurse responsibilities include:

  • Ensures the integrity and quality of the clinical trial is maintained and conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Assist with the administration of trials to research study patients in individual homes
  • May perform medical tests and procedures including lab draws, infusion, and checking and documenting patients’ vitals
  • Reports any pertinent information to supervisors
  • Provides patient education and medical information to participants to ensure understanding of trial
