On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress approved the United States Declaration of Independence inside Independence Hall. The Second Continental Congress then read the United States Declaration of Independence aloud to the public for the first time in Independence Square. Later, in 1787, the United States Constitution was completed in this very hall.
Two major events occurred on this land. The first was the Battle of Gettysburg, considered the Civil War’s turning point and the greatest single loss of American lives in armed combat. The second was the Gettysburg Address, delivered by President Abraham Lincoln four months after the battle, a pivotal moment in US history.
In 1777, after the British captured Philadelphia, General George Washington moved his army to Valley Forge. They endured a brutal winter, with infrequent supplies and tough conditions. Nevertheless, Washington's army gave a heroic fight for survival that played a major role in United States’ victory.
On Christmas Night, 1776, General Washington took the extraordinary gamble of mobilizing his army across the Delaware River in order to stage a surprise attack on enemy forces in Trenton, New Jersey. The maneuver paid off, leading to a victory at the Battle of Trenton and altering the course of the war.
The Liberty Bell was built in 1752, and is one of the most prominent symbols of American independence. The Liberty Bell was famously rung out to mark the first reading of the Declaration of Independence.
